The rice can be either of brown or white but is mixed with a special vinegar to give it its taste and texture. Rolls are normally made with Nori or seaweed which adds to the unique flavor in different types of sushi rolls.

Sushi is sometimes confused with Sashimi, which is related a related Japanese dish but not the same type of sushi dish. Sashimi is a traditional Japanese dish where fish is thinly sliced and served as is or sometimes over a ball of rice. When you find this on a Japanese menu it is generally ordered in pieces rather than sushi rolls. Different types of sushi rolls are usually sliced up in to pieces of 6 or 8 but you are paying for a sushi roll and not by the piece.
